With the official “the thing” remake/ prequel/ de-make on the loose, I thought it would be appropriate to revisit the 1982 bulletproof original. Helmed by the original king of horror and films currently being remade, John carpenter ( the thing, escape from ny, they live, Halloween) the original film was made nearly thirty years ago. Years before shitty unnecessary 3D, and years before digital effects. Relying on traditional story telling, suspense, Oscar nominated practical special effects and stop motion animation the film became an instant classic with a kick ass 80′s synth score.
The film set a new standard for special effects in 82′ many of which hold up today. A claustrophobic, paranoid sci-fi thriller, the original holds up strong and if you venture out to see the 2011 “the thing” remake/ prequel you should see what came before. It’s unlikely the new version of “The Thing” will inspire a sequel in another 29 years and yet to have seen it I’m still pretty confident it’s going to heavily take from the original rather than invent.
